What a custom suit is

A custom suit is cut to your measurements rather than to a size chart. The shoulders sit where your shoulders are, the sleeves stop where they should, and the jacket closes without pulling.

Most men come to custom tailoring because ready-made clothing has failed them in a specific way. The shoulders are too wide. The sleeves are too long. The waist is too full. A suit cut to measure solves all of these at once, rather than one at a time.

The first suit takes the most time. After that we keep your pattern, so every order afterwards is a decision about fabric rather than a return to the tape measure.

We are a family business, founded in Brussels in 1989. Our tailors travel to twenty cities across Europe, the US and Asia, and everything we make is cut by hand.

How a suit should fit

A suit fits when the shoulders sit flat, the jacket closes without strain, and the trousers hang cleanly from the waist. Almost everything else can be corrected later. The shoulder cannot.

The shoulder
The seam should end where your shoulder ends. If it extends further, the sleeve below it collapses and the whole jacket looks too large. This is the one measurement a tailor cannot change afterwards, so it decides everything else.

The chest
Button the jacket. You should be able to slide a flat hand between your chest and the lapel. Tighter than that and the front pulls into an X shape. Looser and the jacket moves away from your body when you turn.

The collar
The jacket collar should rest against your shirt collar with no gap between them. A gap means the jacket is out of balance, and it will not correct itself with wear.

The sleeve
The sleeve should end at the wrist bone and show about a quarter inch of shirt cuff. More than that looks deliberate. Less and the shirt is not visible at all.

The jacket length
The hem should cover your seat. Shorter jackets move in and out of fashion. A jacket that covers the seat is correct in any year, which is the reason to choose it.

The trouser waist
Trousers should sit at your natural waist and stay there without help. If a belt is holding them up, the waist is too large.

The break
The break is where the trouser meets the shoe. A full break folds over the shoe. A half break touches it once. No break stops just above it. All three are correct. Most tailors will tell you otherwise, but they are describing a preference, not a rule.

Fabrics

We buy directly from Loro Piana, Zegna, Dormeuil, and Holland & Sherry — the same mills that supply the best tailoring houses in the world. What a suit is cut from decides how it hangs, how it wears, and how long it lasts.

Weight
Fabric weight is measured in grams, and it matters more than most people expect. Around 250g is a winter weight and holds a crease through a long day. Around 230g works in most climates. Below 200g is for heat, and light fabric creases more easily. That is the trade you are making.

Super numbers
A Super number describes how fine the yarn is. That is all it describes. It is often treated as a measure of quality, because it is a number and numbers are easy to compare. But finer yarn is also more delicate: a Super 150s suit worn twice a week will wear out sooner than a Super 130s. For a suit in regular use, between Super 110s and 130s is the sensible range.

For your climate
High-twist wool and fresco let air through and lose their creases overnight, which matters in heat. Flannel is for cold weather and nothing else. Worsted handles everything in between. If you travel between climates, start with a mid-weight worsted and add to it later.

The details you choose

Below are just 7 of the 30+ options you can customize.

Lapel
Notch, peak or shawl, and how wide. This changes how formal a suit looks more than any other single detail.
Button Stance
One, two or three buttons, and where the fastening button sits. It decides where the eye goes.
Vents
Single, double or none. Double vents hang better when your hands are in your pockets.
Pockets
Flap, jetted or patch. A ticket pocket is optional and is a traditional English detail.
Lining
Full, half or none, in any colour we hold. Only you will see it.
Trousers
Pleated or flat front, cuffed or plain, side adjusters or belt loops.
Monogram
Your initials inside the jacket, in a thread colour and position you choose.

How it is made

Every Senszio suit is hand-cut by a master cutter and made by tailors we employ directly. No garment leaves without a named person having made it.

Canvas, and why it matters in year five
Inside every jacket is a layer that gives it shape and is stitched by hand. It is horsehair canvas that moves as you move and gradually takes the shape of your chest. The jacket fits better in year two than it did in year one.
We canvas every suit.

Six weeks
From the day you order, your suit is cut, made and delivered in about six weeks. If you are working towards a particular date, tell us and we will plan backwards from it.
