Don Draper of Mad Men has a lot to answer for. One of the things he’s currently answering for is the trend among well-dressed gentlemen for wearing a pocket square. Don’t get us wrong. Here at Senszio, we love pocket squares. But it’s important to wear them right.

What’s a pocket square? It’s a handkerchief that you place in the breast pocket of your bespoke jacket. You should leave an inch or so showing. Get it right and it’s a fine tool for making the man. The key is to affect an air of nonchalance in how you wear your pocket square. And never, ever blow your nose on it. Please.

Some pocket-square wearers believe that their hankie must match their tie. They also go to great lengths to ensure they wear it with a flourish. But these people are wrong. The pocket square should complement your tie, not match it. And it should be seen as a finishing touch, not the center of your sartorial world.
Here’s how to get it right.

Classic white
A classic white pocket square is all well and good. Well, actually it isn’t. It’s a little 2012. Things have moved on, and color and texture are very much the order of the day now. It can be stripy, polka dot or check. So long as it complements your shirt and tie, that’ll do fine. If you’re in doubt, choose chambray.

How to fold your pocket square:

  1. Fold it in half.
  2. Fold it in half again.
  3. Fold it into a rectangle.
  4. Fan it out so you can see all the edges.
  5. Put it in your pocket with a half inch poking out.
  6. Mess around a little until it looks not quite right.
